Writing lessons — hide the ball

Beginners often don’t know what information to reveal and what information to hide. Especially in science fiction and fantasy, writers have to set up a world as well as characters and a plot (which makes me wonder why mainstream literature underestimates SF/F so badly, but there you go). So I’ve been rereading Jane Austen and I have been completely absorbed in her writing. I am on Emma now, and just finished Persuasion. Jane Austen is known for the elegance of her language, her precise understanding of human nature, and her ability to pinpoint the foibles and motives of the society in which she moved.
