I think wintry mix is my favorite new weather phrase.  That and lake effect snow (but I think I like that one only because I don’t have to live in it).

So anyway, winter has come to Austin. There’s a little bit of snow on the deck and the porch swing (also on the grill cover). It sleeted all last night. Now it’s just wet and rainy. This will last for a couple of days and then we’ll be back to summer and fall.

We get winter in bursts. It comes for a few days at a time in a series of cold fronts that usually push warm humid air in front of them. Yesterday it was 70 degrees F and humid, until around 4 pm. Then the cold started.

I’ve forgotten what it’s like to live somewhere where winter just stays. Sometimes I miss that. Usually though, by the time winter lingers on the second day, I’m usually happy for the sun. And it warms up and up until the humidity starts and people are out in shorts and t-shirts and saying, “When’s the next cold front!”

And the temperature drops between one moment and the rest. As the saying goes, if you don’t like the weather in Texas, just wait a minute and it will change.*
