At 4:15 yesterday, Dave sends an email inviting friends to his backyard SXSW venue, starting at 4:30. I had just finished reading a manuscript for another author who had requested a blurb, supplied said blurb, and was at loose ends, so, being game, I hopped on my bike and went over.
I was glad I did. His tenant had set up a small venue and invited the following musicians:
It was the kind of serendipity that Austin is known for even outside of SXSW. Good music, good weather, and a jam. For me, the real find was Matt Witte. I snagged a couple of his CDs and have passed one onto my friends at Austin Riffs. I’ve never heard this guy before and I really like his music. If you get a chance to hear “You’ve Got Friends” (which I have on repeat right now) you will be rewarded.
“I know that you miss it
Hell I know where you at,
She got you for now,
But man your friends all want you back
Somewhere in the dark, the devil loses steam,
You’ve got friends in New Orleans.”
